a few weeks ago we opened a poll about the AboutHydrology mailing list, when it overcame the 4000 thousands subscribers. The first effect was that a few subscribers unsubscribed ;-). Just around the 5% of people answered, but the hope is that it is a random sample of the mailing list subscribers.
You can see in the plot below that there is a great variety of people, and this is great.
There are also a lot of different proveniences. All the continents, even if only a few for some.
According to the different role of the participants, there were clearly different interests. Who likes receiving, other use the list for sending information. Many did notes about their wishes that we try to fulfill below.
Most of the people have suggested that advertising the sessions of EGU and AGU is polluting the mailing list. For this reasons, we decided that for the future the mail reminding EGU and AGU sessions will be published to the blog https://hydroaguegu.blogspot.com
It will work as follows: the proponent will send an email to the abouthydrology mailing list as usual, but the content of the email will be placed in a blog post instead than forwarded to the forum. A weekly digest with the summary of all submissions will be posted to the mailing list eventually. Because the blog let you insert figures, the sessions' proponents can send not only the abstract and the link to the session but also a figure illustrative of the topics. They can also work on their text in order to offer to the readers some additional valuable information that cannot be in the abstracts for the conferences.
Others have suggested to categorize the email. Unfortunately the google group machinery does not seem to allow this. OR, at least, we were not able to find how to do it (ideas ?). Therefore we suggest to conform to an abouthydrology etiquette, i.e. that any sender categorize themselves his submissions. Some tags could be:
- Job
- PhD
- Post-doc
- Webinar
- Conference
What it is important is that from now, your "Subject" starts with one of these (or others tags) to make your message recognizable. That's would be a great improvement for everybody and therefore take this little extra effort when you submit an email.
Actually regarding jobs and positions, we also have created a blog where all the positions are accumulated. This is: https://hydrojobs.blogspot.com/
Anche for jobs and positions, if you submit a call to the list, these email will become a post in the hydrojobs blog. Furthermore, the hydrojobs blog collect calls coming from the [Gilbert Club] and [Cryosphere] mailing list too.
Finally an effort will be made to upload in a third blog, The Hydrologic Webinar Tribune, all the posts regarding webinars. As a positive outcome of the the COVID-19 emergency, many webinar have been produced and are made available at daily basis. These constitute precious material that should have the largest visibility. So please, if you advertise a webinar or a webinar series, please take your time to upload the video to some public repository and after send back to us the links. These will be added to your announcements and make the webinar effor more visible. Please consider to put some figure in your webinar announcement so that the blog post will also have a nice appearance.
We all hope that these enhancements will make the use of the mailing list more effective. Some of them though, need a little of your collaboration.
